The show is based off the Columbian telenovela, Yo Soy Betty Le Fea, brought to the US by executive producer and former telenovela star Selma Hayek. Her performance earns her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series and a Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.
Time magazine names her one of its Most Influential People in The World. When she takes a moment to step out of her frumpy Betty clothes and braces the gorgeous America Ferrera is revealed. But she admits in an interview with People Magazine "I am more comfortable being Betty than being on the red carpet all glammed up." In 2007 she wins the Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
