There seems to be quite an obsession with lace and leather trim nowadays.

Even the more conservative fabrics are cut in a way that is way, way too tight or too low cut for most office environments. If you work at the corporate headquarters of Fredericks of Hollywood, then go for it! Otherwise, there are some good, very “true” petite size lines that carry updated yet appropriate petite suits and petite dresses for work:

1. Tibi This is the place for petite suits & dresses. They have a really small size zero, and the fabrics are to die for! The stuff is modern yet sophisticated. These are pricey, but if you can get just one, you’ll be able to wear it for years.

2. Ted Baker: This is a designer out of London who is the master of cutting conservative fabrics in an updated and stylish way (think Mad Men.) Pretty satin, puffy sleeved blouses and lots of wide leg pants. He cuts a pencil skirt like he’s from 1952. Fabulous! These are mid-ranged in price, and the zero is truly small. His accessories rock, too.

3. BCBG They have a range of sizes that go down to “XXS” and “XS.” I’m really small (4’10") and can barely get into the XXS. The fabrics are lush and the styles range from nicely conservative to “OMG, who would wear that to work?” I have a wrap around jacket and pant petite suit set (pictured above) that I wear all the time.

4. Nordstrom O.K., so you’re thinking, a department store? Yes, they do have a limited number of cute suits in the petite section. Nordstrom has a “home” brand called “Classiques.” They run about $500 for the jacket and pant (or skirt) but the fabrics are lovely and can get really wild. (I have a pink suit with brown pinstripes with a scalloped edge collar.) Worth a look!

5. Tahari This is a brand that makes a true size 0 and are only about $200 for the whole suit. These are made of a polyester blend that does not wrinkle! Great for business travel. They “hang well” off the body, but tend to be sort of conservative. Good for basic black, gray, or blue suiting. Tahari Suits.

6. Ann Taylor Loft:They carry a petite line with their smallest size being a petite 00 and going up 2 petite, 4 petite and 6 petite from there. Clothing is modern and stylish and suits are well priced at approximately $150 for both pieces. Their suits have the cropped pant option so if you work in a California Casual type of environment these pants are cute and you can show off a great pair of shoes. They usually have five or six suits available at any time.

7. Arden B Clothing has two size lines, one starts at size XS and the other at size 0. Both are are tiny, if you are 4'10- 5'2" the smallest size will fit, if you're 5'2" or taller then try the size S or size 2.

Their "Wear To Work" line consists of several pairs of petite trousers, petite pencil skirts, girlfriend blazers and petite tunics all of which can be mixed and matched and all come in a couple different color ways.

Arden B is not all about the black suit, so you can pick up some hip new pieces to wear to work. Think ruffles and lace, and cute three-quarter sleeve Girlfriend Blazers.

8. Banana Republic petites carries size 00 and size 24 petite. Really! Quintessential black and gray suiting, classic skirt suits and gorgeous pants suits that you will love.
